Stevens-Swan Human Society's 100th year coming to a close
The 100th Anniversary for the Stevens-Swan Humane Society is coming to a close. But there is still plenty of opportunity to get involved and give back before 2010 wraps up. Our Sarah Hagen visited the shelter and tells us what's on the animals' holiday wish list.

UTICA, N.Y. – One hundred years later and still the need is great. This year marks a centennial celebration for the Stevens-Swan Humane Society.
Marketing Director Jerry Kraus said, "Our shelter is full just like all humane societies in our area. We are maxed out as far as having animals in cages."
Hundreds of animals that each cost about $10 a day to take care of. A feat that's only possible with help from the community.
Cosmo Pellegrino, who has found three canine companions at the shelter in years past, is just one of many volunteers who help make that happen.
Pellegrino said, "Number one, I hope people support the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. But please don't get a pet it you cannot afford it. We only get them back."
And if adoption is out of your realm of reality, those in charge here say there are plenty of other ways for you to help.
Pellegrino said, "Volunteering. Come here and walk the dogs, play with the dogs."
Kraus said, "They are helping us with the strays, abused, turn-ins, seized animals. If they can't volunteer they can become a member, part of our team and help us financially."
In fact, there's a holiday campaign happening now, an effort to get 100 new members signed up before the new year. And new centennial ornaments for sale, with all the proceeds going back to the animals in need.
And what do they need? Well, like many during the holidays, the animals have a wish list.
Kraus said, "We go through so much food, cleaning supplies, it is a constant wish list. It doesn't end."
And it's hoped the support won't either.
