ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira City School District Superintendent lays out scenarios that would help close a $10 million budget gap and each of them includes heavy layoffs.
Wednesday, Superintendent Joe Hochreiter proposed three plans for layoffs on the elementary school level and said his finance committee prefers the third option that includes one of the two redistricting plans, cutting 57 teachers, and saving more than $3 million.
31 teachers would be cut in the district's middle schools, and 28 on the high school level, each proposal saving more than $1 million. Many of the teachers included in those cuts are art, music and physical education instructors.
"We're at the level of looking at what must we teach and what do we teach beyond the mandates and unfortunately, the way the chips fall, that's at the elementary schools," said Hochreiter.
Even after these proposed cuts, there remains a $2 million deficit that the finance committee must figure out how to close through options like wage freezes and the sale of property.
