BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- We have more details following an incident in Binghamton Wednesday that resulted in the response of three police agencies, including a SWAT Team.
Calls came in around 2:45 p.m. from a cell phone and during the call, a dispatcher heard mention of a gun, then heard a possible gun shot. Police pinged the cell phone to a location near Gillen Drive in the city and Binghamton Police responded. However, it was later determined that was not the correct location.
The investigation was turned over to the Broome County Sheriff's office and New York State Police after the Town of Binghamton turned out to be the actual origin of the call.
In the end, the investigation revealed no shots were fired and no one was injured.
The Sheriff's Department says the confusion was due to the fact that the call came in from an older model cell phone, which was unable to be used to pinpoint an exact location.
"Had that been a newer cellular device, we would have had better accuracy and probably have pinpointed it a lot sooner, but again, based on the information available at that time, we have to respond appropriately to protect other citizens in the area and also police officers going into an incident," said Broome County Sheriff Det. Sgt. Jason Ellis.
No one was arrested and no charges were filed following the incident.
