Local ventriloquist tries out for "America's Got Talent"

By: Karen Lee

He's an event planner by day and ventriloquist by night. An Upstate New York man is one of 40 YouTube contestants who'd like to be on "America's Got Talent." Our Karen Lee met up with Dale Romleski and his puppets as they plea for your votes.

ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- There's Oscar singing off the Lion King soundtrack. Or maybe you prefer Junior's version of a Willie Nelson hit.

For six years, Turning Stone event planner Dale Romleski has been jumping out of his own body and into a furry character.

"It kind of started out as singing to myself in the vehicle and not liking the looks people were giving me when I couldn't hit the right note, so I started singing without moving my lips and it turned into ventriloquism," said Romleski.

Right now, Romleski's five children are his biggest fans.

"They beg for the puppets to come out. When the puppets come out, they talk more to them than they do to me," said Romleski.

He wants to multiply that fan base as much as he can. Romleski is one of the YouTube contestants trying out for the wildcard position on America's Got Talent. Romleski has 39 other competitors, including bikini girl.

"I kind of went the other direction. I didn't think I would really get the votes if I was running around in a bikini. So I'm hoping they're going to judge me on talent and the fact that you've seen me before or want to see me more, instead of what I'm wearing," he said.

Three years ago, contestant Terry Fator was told a ventriloquist could never win America's Got Talent. He ended up winning and now has his own Las Vegas show. Romleski is going for the same fate.

"To be able to play with the puppets and have fun for the rest of my life, it would be a dream come true," Romleski said.

The person with the most votes by July 4th will be selected for a slot on the TV show.

Romlesky is not the only Upstater to have entered the contest. A jazz singer from Oneida is also in the wildcard running.
