Penn Traffic to close P&C and Quality Market stores

By: Kat De Maria

Thousands of people will be out of work as dozens of New York supermarkets close. Penn Traffic filed for bankruptcy last week. Now the company has filed plans to sell or close all of its P&C and Quality Market stores in the state. Our Kat De Maria has more.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- At Shop City, P&C customers have getting a little bad news with their bread and eggs over the past few days. This and all of the P&Cs are slated to be closed over the winter.

While inconveniencing shoppers in dozens of towns and cities, the move is also costing some 4,100 people their jobs, including 23-year veteran David Morse.

"It's been a good company to work for. A few shaky years, it gets a little frustrating after awhile," Morse said.

Morse says Penn Traffic has had its ups and downs, but never like now. Friday, he and other workers at the P&C distribution center in Geddes received letters giving them 90 days notice of the warehouse's closure. But Morse says that's not all the letter said.

"Keep working. Business as usual. Show up. We still have our stores. They're going to try and sell some of their stores and assets to cover their debt," said Morse.

According to New York's Labor Department website, Penn Traffic officials are selling all of the P&C and Quality Market stores in the state. That includes the supermarket in Shop City, which people in the Lyncourt area say they're used to having close by.

"It's really convenient when it's time to make dinner and you need to run and get something," said Syracuse resident Robert Long.

"We just go up the street and we're there. So it's really good. And they're a good store," said Lyncourt resident Stephanie Rivizzigno.

And Salina Town Supervisor Mark Nicotra says the only store. Nicotra says the supermarket is a neighborhood fixture.

"It's almost like a community center, to a certain extent, because you're going in there go get your groceries, you see people you know and it just makes you feel good about going about your day," Nicotra said.

"I hope and pray they stay on, that something happens that something will come about that they will stay on," said Rivizzigno.

If not, Morse and others will likely be out of a job come February. He says workers could point fingers at Penn Traffic, the economy, Wal-Mart and others. But he says there's really no point.

"We know we have to work, whether it's here or someplace else. I'd like to stay here, at least get my 30 years in the Teamsters and be able to retire on that. But if I can't, then I can't," Morse said.

Morse says Penn Traffic is looking for buyers for its stores. Meanwhile, according to the Labor Department website, they're set to close February 15th.
