SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Thanksgiving is usually a happy day spent with friends and family around a nice meal. But sometimes, in an instant, good times can go bad while preparing for Thanksgiving.

The Red Cross says each year more than more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day and that's twice the number on an average day. Many times kitchen fires and other dangers can be prevented.

We spoke with a local insurance agent Steve Donigan who urges cooks to not leave cooking food unattended and to supervise children who may be in the kitchen.

Donigan says grease fires happen frequently and many people do the wrong thing to try and stop it.

"People throw water on it. And Instead of just smothering it, cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire, and then they end up spilling the grease or hot water on themselves or a child. What we need to do is make sure that there isn't too many people in the kitchen at once bumping into each other," said Donigan.

Other tips to ensure your holiday is a happy one is to make sure cooking appliances are in good working order.

Keep potholders, food wrappers and decorations away from heat sources while cooking.

Set timers to keep track of turkeys and other food items that require extended cooking times.

And if there is a fire call 911 immediately.
