CENTRAL NEW YORK -- Two Central New York lawmakers are looking for a safer way to pay tribute to people who lose their lives while on the road.

It's often common for friends and families to place flowers at crash sites where someone they know has died. Both Senator Joseph Griffo and Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito are in favor of creating a law where the state will erect a permanent memorial marker on those sites. The marker would pay tribute to the deceased while also reminding drivers to be safe.

"If we can put a permanent memorial there, I think it actually accomplishes more because many times when you're placing something at the site, the weather will destroy it, or something else. The other issue we have is that it's a dangerous situation where they're going into that traffic area again and somebody else could actually lose their life," Griffo said.

Griffo plans to propose the legislation when the two houses meet back up in January.
