OLD FORGE, N.Y. - Up in the Adirondack village of Old Forge, families are taking care of their holiday shopping. Though they may not be your everyday gifts.

"Adirondack gifts are a little bit unique, something you don't see in a lot of the commercial stores," said Lori Zellweger, owner of Wilderness Interiors.

But that didn't seem to stop people from filling the streets, and the shops to find that extra meaningful present.

"We found good sales, but that's what we like, we found more unique gifts, and that's what we like to take back, and people seem to appreciate that we're thinking more of something more unique than just going to a big chain store," said Judy Grebbner, a shopper from Henreitta.

And you'll find much more than unique gifts around here. Aside from the Thanksgiving Weekend sales, you'll find an entire holiday experience: from real life reindeer, to horse drawn carriage tours.

"So we've had a lot of different ways to give people a different experience than what they're used to, maybe in a metropolitan area," said Chip Kiefer, owner of Souvenir Village.

For the past decade, Old Forge has played host to the Adirondack Christmas on Main Street. Store owners say it's been a big success to the area.

"It's added a tremendous amount of income to the area, and I think it's just an energy to that, that the area gets for this weekend that sort of puts us into the winter spirit," said Kiefer.

And patrons agree.

"I think it's phenomenal, it brings that little hometown spirt to the whole thing," said Grebbner/

Proving that going off the beaten path is sometimes worth the drive.

The Town of Inlet also takes part in Adirondack Christmas on Main Street. The shopping experience continues through Sunday evening.
