HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Herkimer County Sheriff's office has upgraded its pistol permit system. The Sheriff received $10,000 from the Justice Assistance Grant.

Senator James Seward helped to secure the funding. He demonstrated how the new computerized system works.

The Sheriff's office no longer has to use a typewriter when issuing the actual permits. The computerized system has streamlined the whole process.

"When sportsmen and our constituents come in, they're not sitting around waiting any longer than they really have to. They can come in, in a very short time and have a new permit issued to them, along with a picture and fingerprint. The new permits are much more secure than the old ones," said Sheriff Christopher Farber.

The Sheriff's office has been using this system for a month.
