New Hartford Police say a Sauquoit Middle School student was being assisted by a classmate with a math problem. They say the student being helped became frustrated and stabbed his classmate in the neck with his pencil on Monday. The victim, who is also 11, had pain, swelling and redness, but was able to continue with class.

The 11-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

The names of the students are not being disclosed because of their ages.
