LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- The Liverpool school board approved its spending plan Monday night, putting 16 job cuts and a 2.3 percent tax hike on the table for voters to decide on next month.

The budget is an improvement over the Superintendent's original proposal, mainly because more than a million dollars in funding was restored by the state.

Superintendent Dr. Richard Johns says that money was used to reduce the impact on taxpayers and save more than a dozen jobs.

"I gave them the superintendent's proposed budget over a month ago, the revenue side of that equation changed fairly significantly in the last five weeks and fortunately to the positive. So the board was able to do some things that it couldn't do five weeks ago," Dr. Johns said.

The budget also includes the creation of a FOCUS Academy, a topic of controversy within the district.

The public vote is May 17th.
