BIG FLATS, N.Y. -- It was a scary scene on Route 86 in Big Flats when a white Lincoln Continental caught fire on the shoulder of the road around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Witnesses say the driver, who was an elderly man, pulled over when the engine started smoking and was helped out of the car by other drivers before it went up in flames.

Traffic on Route 86 was cut down to a single lane as the Big Flats Fire Department extinguished the fire.

There is no word on how it may have started. Both lanes on the highway have since reopened.
