UTICA, N.Y. -- Utica firefighters faced some challenges Tuesday in putting out three brush fires.
One fire started in what appears to be a pile of railroad ties on secure National Grid property in North Utica. They believe embers from that fire started two small brush fires nearby.
Once they arrived, fire crews had to cut locks to get to the largest fire. They also had issues with a broken hydrant near the two brush fires.
Deputy Fire Chief Michael Wusik says the crews were luckily training nearby, a factor that helped in putting out the fire significantly.
"It definitely could have spread more. It's a little breezy today, that's why the breeze is coming towards us and we have the spot fires over here. If we were delayed another five or ten minutes, which is a possibility, it could have been a little bit worse," he said.
Investigators don't believe any serious damage was done to any of the property. They are still investigating the cause of the fire.
