NEW YORK STATE -- Homeowners and farmers in the Central New York and North Country areas now have an option to combat the spread of the deadly EEE virus.

Larvicide is now available to 2,700 homeowners in six different counties. The free samples of larvicide can be used to treat sitting water, killing larva living there that may contain the EEE virus. The samples are part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness of the disease.

Last summer, four-year-old Maggie Sue Wilcox of Oswego County was killed by the virus.

The county's Public Health Director stresses how important it is to prevent and protect yourself from mosquito-borne illnesses.

"People really need to use their public health protective measures. Those include avoiding mosquitoes at dusk and dawn. If you have to be out during times when mosquitoes are around, we want people to wear long clothing, use mosquito repellant," said Inga Back.

The larvicide will be made available in Oswego, Onondaga, Oneida, Jefferson, Madison and St. Lawrence counties.
