UTICA, N.Y. -- Good news for East Utica residents looking to keep cool this summer. Buckley Pool is expected to reopen as early as next week.
City officials had said it looked like the pool might be closed for the rest of the summer.
A circulation pump failed at the beginning of the week and burned out its electrical service. The $15,000 cost to repair the pump and restore electricity is more than the cash-strapped city can afford.
Now, a group of residents have banded together with the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida counties to raise that money.
"We didn't want another generation of kids to miss out on what we had growing up. We learned to swim here. We were here every day and it's much more than a swimming pool. This is where I've met people that've turned into lifelong friends, people that've been mentors," said Frank DuRoss, a Utica resident who helped organize the fundraising effort.
The group expects to have all of the money raised by Friday.
City officials say the pool could be up and running by Wednesday or Thursday of next week.
