FRANKFORT, N.Y. -- She's responded to recovery efforts for disasters ranging from the Colorado wildfires to the Joplin tornado and now a Frankfort woman is getting national recognition for her volunteer work.
Alexandra Tamburro, 24, received the Congressional Award Medal from Congressman Richard Hanna Friday. Tamburro was honored for the ten months she volunteered with AmeriCorps.
In addition to disaster response, she was certified to do taxes for low income families for free.
Though difficult, Tamburro says joining AmeriCorps was a natural step for her.
"I've always felt the need to help those that need it and strengthen communities. After I graduated college, I was originally looking into the Peace Corps, and there was no better time for me to do it than right after school," said Tamburro.
Tamburro says her next step is finding a job, possibly with a non-profit group in Washington, D.C.
