After 124 years in operation, production will officially shut down Thursday night at New Process Gear. The DeWitt auto parts maker has been winding down production for months and Thursday was the last day on the job for many workers. Our Candace Hopkins caught up with some of those employees as they left work for the last time.

ONONDAGE COUNTY, N.Y. -- The end of an era has been marked Thursday with the halt of production at New Process Gear and the last day of work for almost all of the remaining employees.

The manufacturing facility will cease operations on Thursday at the plant owned by Magna International. After Thursday, a facility that once housed nearly 4,000 employees will have just 31 on site.

With the final stage of production now complete, the remaining workers will be tasked to complete the final steps in closing down the facility over the next few months.

New Process Gear declined interviews, but the general manager released the following statement about the shut down saying, "I want to extend a sincere thank you to the employees of NPG, UAW Locals 624 and 2149, and the Syracuse community for their ongoing support, dedication and commitment to NPG and Magna. The employees here have demonstrated a great deal of professionalism and responsibility throughout the wind down process--even reaching all-time highs in throughput and quality. That says a lot about the resiliency of this workforce. I truly wish our employees the best of luck in their next endeavors.”
