BRONX, N.Y. -- Police have identified the man mauled by a tiger at a Bronx Zoo exhibit on Friday as a Putnam County resident. Police said David Villalobos, 25, of Mahopac, jumped from a monorail train into the enclosure of a 400 pound Siberian tiger.
According to police, they are stunned as to why Villalobos would jump from the moving train. Zoo officials quickly responded by spraying the tiger with a fire extinguisher in order to free the man.
Villalobos suffered several severe injuries, and is in critical, but stable condition.
"The man received various bites and puncture wounds on his arms and legs, and on top of his shoulder and back. The keepers, because of their skill working with the wild animal were able to haul the tiger in off the exhibit into his holding area and secure the animal," said Jim Breheny, Bronx Zoo Director.
Breheny said the tiger did nothing wrong and will not be euthanized.
