BRASHER FALLS, N.Y. -- A cook-off had the smell of peppers and onions wafting through school halls.

St. Lawrence Central Middle School students competed in the preliminary rounds for North Country Junior Iron Chef. Seven teams tried to cook up a healthy quesadilla. The students could choose from a variety of ingredients.

The competition is not just to improve cooking skills. Teachers say the students will gain life skills as well.

"They'll work at teamwork, organization and they will have a lot of fun," said Anne Norton, home and careers teacher.

The winning team from Wednesday's competition will compete against other North Country schools in March.
