WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Music students at Jefferson Community College took a break from the books to listen to a live brass quintet during class time.

The 10th Mountain Division Band Brass Quintet of Fort Drum visited students to give them a firsthand experience of their music. The idea was for students to be able to understand American composers and to learn something from the performance. They got to hear a mix of classical music, jazz and American military and patriotic marches, while learning about the history behind each piece.

"There is no substitute for live music as far as I'm concerned. Music appreciation is essentially a music history light course and we spend a lot of time watching YouTube videos of music throughout the centuries, but here is a chance to really here a performance live by flesh and blood musicians," said Steve Lester, a JCC Adjunct Music Instructor.

The band has come to visit the music class over the past four years.
