POTSDAM, N.Y. -- In a surprise announcement, SUNY Potsdam President John Schwaller announced Tuesday his plans to resign.

Schwaller shared the decision in an email, saying his last day will be July 31st of next year. He didn't give a reason, but said the resignation "comes after much consideration" and he feels "the time is right to turn the campus over to new leadership."

Schwaller has served as president for the last six years. Schools leaders say his presence will be missed, but SUNY Potsdam is still in good hands.

"Potsdam will continue to provide the experience for students that it has always provided. President Schwaller created a way to describe ourselves as providing a handcrafted education to students," said Margret Madden, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The SUNY Board of Trustees will discuss the leadership transition at its December meeting.
