ITHACA, N.Y. -- A woman has been charged for allegedly leaving 17 cats in terrible conditions. The SPCA of Tompkins County rescued the cats back in September and now some are ready for homes.

The organization was called to a West Seneca Street apartment in Ithaca where Kristen Inman was living. Investigators say she hadn't been seen for more than a week. Neighbors knew the animals were in her apartment.

Rescuers say the cats were not fed and the floor was covered in urine and feces. She has been charged with one count of failure to provide proper sustenance and one count of failing to provide food, water and wholesome air. The executive director of the SPCA says four have been put up for adoption.

"We've just come off of our largest peak of our season with our cat population, so, unfortunately, this hoarding case is association with our normal population has really stressed the shelter to its maximum capacity for our cat population," said Jim Bouderau, Executive Director of the SPCA Tompkins County.

The organization has waived all adult cat adoption fees in hopes to find homes for all of them.

Inman is expected back in Ithaca City Court December 14th.
