LOWVILLE, N.Y. -- A historical marker that has been absent from its home along North State Street in Lowville for the last thirteen months is back where it belongs.

Thursday marked the return of the 50 foot Civil War monument that has stood in the public triangle since 1883. The statue had sustained decades of corrosion and underwent a $170,000 restoration, $30,000 of which was raised by the Save Our Statue committee.

“This is really exciting. I thought it was never going to happen. We had lots of chicken barbecues. We had two Civil War reenactments over at the Pratt-Northam Foundation. We sold note cards and more chicken barbeques," said Charlotte Beagle, Chair of the Save Our Statue Committee.

Five-thousand people gathered for the original dedication of the monument in 1883.

The group hopes to have another good turnout for their rededication ceremony planned for Memorial Day next year.
