VESTAL, N.Y. -- Some students at BU tried to break a festive record on Monday night. The fun was all part of the university’s Chanukah celebration.

On the table was the Guinness World Record for the most people to participate in a dreidel “spin off.” Organizers say they needed more than 734 people to be in the room at once to break the record and as of 7 p.m., they counted 749 total.

The event was sponsored by the Chabad Center for Jewish Student Life. Students also gathered there to take part in a Chanukah toy drive. Toys will be delivered to children suffering from cancer.

Students say they were thrilled to be a part of both.

"We raised over $10,000, so it's been so exciting to see everyone here, supporting kids with cancer, spin dreidels and break a world record," said Tamar Gaffin-Cahn, BU junior.

Organizers say they won’t know if they broke the record until everything is looked over by Guinness World Record officials. That could take a couple weeks.
