SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse's mayor and police chief came together Monday night to address concerns about crime within the community, particularly among young people.

This weekend, two teenagers and two 12-year-olds were arrested for breaking into Danforth Elementary School and trying to steal computers and projectors. At the presentation Monday, the chief also highlighted one case where a teen was arrested for burglary eight times in the past four months.

City officials say they're trying to take a proactive approach with programs like D.A.R.E. and the gang resistance educational training program. They want the public to know they are focused on the problem and the individuals involved.

“We believe that we have a far greater ability to intervene early and change the course of their life by making sure that they get the kind of support that they have and making sure that we give them alternatives,” Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner said.

Overall, burglaries in the city are below their five year average but still add up to nearly 1,800 and 83 percent of those are residential.
