BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- It was also an emotional morning in court for the family of 16-year-old Shelby Jenkins.

Jenkins was choked to death in her home on Westland Road in Vestal back in June. Her boyfriend, Steven Lipka, pleaded guilty to manslaughter back in September. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison, plus five years of post release supervision Friday.

During the sentencing, Jenkins’ family cried as they read prepared statements. Family members told Lipka the damage and pain he caused is irreparable.

Lipka apologized to Jenkins’ family and told them he didn't know what else to say.

Officers who worked the case commended the work of police and offered their condolences.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Shelby Jenkins’ family, her daughter, her friends and everybody affected by this homicide. The case came to a conclusion today at least in the legal system," Town of Vestal Police Detective Sgt. Christopher Streno said.

Jenkins was finishing up her junior year at BOCES Evertech where she was studying auto body when she was killed. She and Lipka were neighbors and shared an infant child together.
