UTICA, N.Y. -- Utica says they've completed phase one of a $70 million sewer upgrade project, something the city hopes will bring a more updated infrastructure with it.

The project puts them in line with EPA and DEC guidelines on separate sewage and storm drainage lines. They say it should minimize sewage backups throughout the city.

Utica's Mayor Robert Palmieri says he hopes to use the updates to make other changes in the city.

“So we have the infrastructure taken care of underneath and also the top of it, which would be, as you see your roads, your curbs and the sidewalks,” said Mayor Palmieri.

This first phase updated sewers in West Utica. City leaders also have work planned for Genesee Street and East Utica during the next few months.
