Crews ready for the storm

A winter storm is bringing heavy snow and strong winds across the region overnight and into the morning hours. Many officials are asking people to avoid traveling if possible. Our Candace Hopkins was braving the elements for us and gave us an idea of what it looks like outside.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- All day Wednesday, Syracuse DPW crews were gearing up to battle the snow. Salt deliveries were made to ensure all city plows would be ready to go.

Inside the garage, crews worked to make last minute repairs, so the entire fleet could be out on the roads.

While it has been a long time since there was a snow event of this size, drivers are used to these kind of storms.

"We prepare the same year in and year out, so as far as anything different, it's normal business and we are prepared whether we get two inches of snow or two feet of snow," said Tom Simone, Syracuse Department of Public Works First Department Commissioner.

The good news is a lot of people are on vacation this week, so while travel may be slow, there should be less traffic than usual.
