ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Hudson Valley man has died following a snowmobile crash in Oneida County near the Adirondacks. It happened on River Road in Forestport just before 10:30 p.m. Friday.

State Police say Richard Petty, 23, of Pine Bush, was riding with seven other people when he lost control on a curve. The snowmobile hit an embankment, throwing Petty off. He hit a tree, suffering a massive head injury.

Petty was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, where he later died.

Police say unsafe speed played a role in the crash.
