BB gun brought to basketball game

UTICA, N.Y. -- Utica Police are investigating an incident where a BB gun was brought to a school basketball game Tuesday night.

Detectives say an off-duty officer was at Donovan Junior High for the game when she witnessed a teen drop what appeared to be a handgun on the gym floor. She alerted the school resource officer, who was also there, and the two chased the boy out the door.

The suspect, who turned out to be 14-years-old, refused to drop the weapon and actually pointed the gun at one of the officers, but never fired. He eventually gave up the weapon, which turned out to be a BB gun.

The boy was taken into custody and the case turned over to Utica Police's Juvenile Aid Unit.

The basketball game also wound up being cancelled because of the incident.
