UTICA, N.Y. -- In an effort to save the City of Utica hundreds of thousands of dollars, Utica also filed a grievance Tuesday against the city's police union.

The city is trying to gain more control over which officers are eligible for line-up pay.

Line-up pay gives officers an overtime pay rate for showing up 15 minutes early. The city says it wants to be in charge of when line-up pay goes into effect.

Mayor Palmieri says if he gets his way, it could save the city $500,000 a year.

The city is already headed to arbitration with the union about expired contracts from 2011.

Union officials say they expect the line-up pay issue to be included in that proceeding later this year.
