DELAWARE COUNTY, N.Y. -- State Police in Oneonta are investigating a suspicious fire in the Town of Walton. Officials say it happened at a home on John Lockwood Road around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

When police first arrived, they were told that the village police chief was already called to the home for a criminal investigation. Officials say that's when they heard two gun shots come from inside the house.

Officers went inside and found one woman dead on the second floor. That's when they realized home was on fire and exited.

Multiple fire departments were called in. Once firefighters extinguished the flames, they found the remains of two people.

Both sets of remains were taken to a Binghamton hospital for identification.

A neighbor says the large amount of smoke coming from the home prompted him to call 911.

"I was letting my dogs out, that's in the afternoon, and I saw some smoke from across the street. And I said gee, that's a lot of smoke for a fireplace. And as I was watching the dogs, I saw more smoke and I knew then it wasn't just from a fireplace, that something was on fire, seriously on fire," neighbor Joe Gouse said.
