We're at the beginning of the summer travel season. Gas prices are slowly dropping, but the dip isn't enough for some people to take their usual road trips. Our Iris St. Meran spoke with some RV owners on the impact fuel has on their summer plans.

CAMILLUS, N.Y. -- The New York Centrals, the local chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association is celebrating the chapter's 35th year with a rally this weekend in Camillus.

"We make RVing fun. We take advantage of RVing and it kind of leads to a nice lifestyle,” said Daniel McCoy, New York Centrals Second Vice President.

It is a lifestyle that allows them to travel hundreds of thousands of miles around the region and country. But for some chapter members, a long distance ride is not on the itinerary. Chapter President Paul Hallagan planned to go to Indianapolis for an RV event but is staying around Central New York instead.

Hallagan said, "We stay local because of the fact that fuel prices are still rather high. Even though they went up but they went back down, it's still higher than last year's prices. The local travel is much more important for our chapters to stay."

RVs like this motor coach have a 100 gallon tank. The owner says he fills up at $4.10 per gallon for diesel. So, you can imagine why some people are deciding not to go too far this season.

"It's too much. They don't get the best mileage," said Hallagan.

The bigger RVs get about eight miles per gallon which is good for that size. To accommodate those who are staying closer to home, the chapter has a number of monthly rallies planned nearby, including one at Harbor Fest.
